Four Spheres Of Social Success

by Michael Oksa

Getting along with people is key to personal development. Yes, it is we that have to take responsibility for our growth, but never at the expense of hurting or ignoring others. Social paradigms expand as we make progress.

The easiest way to think of this is as expanding spheres of influence. Each area leads to the next. Skipping a step along the way means there could be dysfunction or lack of understanding. When conflict arises in one of the following spheres, move back to the previous step to see if that is where the problem lies.

These are the four basic spheres of influence.

Self - This means you.
You have to be comfortable with yourself before you can be truly comfortable with others. Therefore success in this area would have to, at the very least, include being happy with yourself. You are the only one responsible for what happens in the sphere of self. While this may make some people apprehensive, there is great power in this step.

Family - People related to you by blood or law fall into this sphere.
In theory, they have to love you no matter how much you screw-up. In reality though, they may resent you when you do well, and gloat when you do poorly. Before successfully moving to the next sphere, you need to be loving, and non-judgmental toward your family. Notice, that this does not mean they will feel the same way toward you. This is especially true if they have not moved from the sphere of self.

Community - People outside of your family that you have direct contact with.
Friends, acquaintances, co-workers, and neighbors are encompassed by this sphere. There are many different levels of interaction within this group. You find it is somewhat easier to relate to members in this sphere. Do not be fooled. This is often due to an underlying superficiality in the relationship. Before moving on to the next sphere, aim to get to know your community better. As you do, you will likely sense your social status rising. Keep your ego in check, and use this status to increase your sphere of community.

World - People that fall outside of the other three groups fall into this sphere.
It is the rare individual who can master this sphere. Making small changes for the greater good, contributing to charity, and volunteering are good ways to start impacting this social sphere. Religious leaders, some politicians, and philanthropists are among those who have reached this level.

In the social, as in all areas of success, success has to some degree be self-defined. Having a guide, and knowing where you can expand and grow will help you along the way.
