Personal Best

by Carrie Fleharty

Obtaining your personal best is a goal for each day. One would think that most of us would strive to be our personal best. Day in and day out we find people who just settle for status quo, and who seem to care about their own problems. Have you seen those kind of people around us? Maybe you're one of them, but the truth is that you can change and find your personal best.

To achieve our personal best is to decide to be someone of worth, and placing our best foot forward. We have the ability to choose to take each task and make it better through our personal best no matter how mundane the task. Doesn't matter whether you pick up trash, dig ditches, sit at the information desk, or flip burgers the need to do our best is a must. Think about this for a minute: If we allow ourselves to remain at status quo then our attitude will change to less than positive. The emotions of being worthless, and feeling angry, sad, disappointed, and disgruntled will sink into our being.

Leaders or managers, if you continue to accept status quo then you will get slop. "Sloppy is as sloppy does." Why not make your staff, your organization well aware that you prefer no matter what task that all will need to put forth their personal best. This will not be easy. Time will need to be spent in the act of teaching and developing an understanding of personal best.

Staff of many organizations may believe that only athletes need to be concerned about personal best. That is so not true. Personal best is a way of making our lives better, striving to become a better person, worker, friend, neighbor, or husband/wife. Becoming better will lead to reaching out to your dreams, and making them come to fruition.

Look at Suze Orman. She was a woman who made very little as a waitress, and then she borrowed money to open her own restaurant. Well, she lost everything. She could have said, "Hey, Somebody dumped on me, and I'm not worth it so I'll just go back to waitressing." But no, she didn't. She made a decicision to become better at finances. She learned about the stock market, about the money process, and everything she could in the financial institutions. This learning and this striving has led her to be the financial guru that she is today. In other words she reached her personal best.

Some people tend to believe that if they get up, go to their job with no regards to time, output or energy then life is hunky dorey. They have an attitude of, "Hey, no one will care, so why should I show up on time. I get my work done. What else do I need to do?" People who believe this need to ask themselves some very heavy questions.

"Do I want to stay in this job? Do I want to be doing this very thing for the rest of my life? Can I still do this 10-15-20 years from now? If not then what?" Think these questions through carefully. What we do now will have a cause an effect relationship in the future. The future, your future depends on the answers to those questions. Ask these questions of yourself.

While you are working no matter how meaningless the task may seem put forth your personal best. Get to work on time, look around and do one or two extra tasks. These tasks will show that you care about yourself, and about the work you produce. In everything you do and all that you do promote your personal best which means you are promoting you. Any endeavor and all endeavors that you take on could provide you a path of promotion. What better motivation do you need to put forth your personal best.
