Not Your Dream Job?
by Carrie Fleharty
My current position is not my dream job. I'm just biding time until either I win the lottery, or I retire. Sound familiar? I'm sure some of you have had those types of thoughts. Of course the chance of winning lottery is about one billion to one. Then you still may not end up with your dream job, and your money won't last. So, what do you do when you hate your job, and you are sitting there biding time until the dream job shows up? Do you quit your job? No. Do you find something else to do? It's possible.
But you need to make sure you are clear about what you do want, and what you think your dream job will be. Don't just settle for anything and say, "Oh, I'll just become a zoo keeper. What if you already know what kind of dream job you want? What do you do now?
For me this is exactly where I am at in my life. I am not in my dream job, and I am waiting. My burning question is as follows: What is the best way for me to handle my attitude in my present job while I wait for my new career of being a Personal Life Coach to take off? Answer: Work on staying in the moment, and focusing my attention on the good of the current job, and know that in the evening when I get home, I can work on my life's purpose with great joy. This is not an easy task, but one that must take place to be of any benefit to anyone in the current job.
You have heard it many times. "Attitude is everything." That statement is so very true. Chances are that your attitude about your current job is affecting everything in your life. Considering that when we aren't happy at work, usually we aren't happy anywhere. We need to make an attitudinal adjustment. We must lay down the ground work to refocus our thoughts. We need to turn our attention onto the present, "the now."
Think through some questions that I'm about to put to you. What was the reason that you took this job? Did you like it at the beginning? Is there still some part of the job that you feel joy in doing? Now, take each day as if it was the only day that mattered. Then take each hour as if it was the only hour that mattered, and yes, take each minute as if it was the only minute that mattered.
Refocus your thoughts on each minute. Not the big picture, but each minute. What task do you need accomplish this minute? Take your mind and tell yourself, that this is all that matters. This task is the only task that matters and you work diligently on that task at hand. When that task is done, then start another task, and work it the same way. You'll find that by the end of the day, you have forgotten that you hate your job. All that matters are the task(s) that need to be accomplished.
Absorb those tasks at hand, and place your thinking in the moment. For in the moment is really all we have. This moment in time will not again reappear. This moment is the most important moment, "because it is in the now." There can never be any moment just like this one again. Yes, this is hard to do, but very necessary. Just read Eckhart Tolle's book: A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose.
As I stated earlier I am in this very situation. I am a school librarian, who is bored with her job, and am embarking on a new career of becoming a Personal Life Coach. Do I have clients yet? No, but someday I will. In the meantime, I have to continue to work at my present job. I say almost half-sarcastically that "I love my job, and I'm happy to be here." I believe that AA states to fake it till you make it. I did this all last year. This school year has started, and I didn't expect to be back at school, but I am. (Something about having a salary and health insurance is important.) I may be in the school situation for seven more years. I have to not only survive, but I have to have a better attitude.
I began to focus more on each of the tasks that I need to accomplish. I began to get excited about my Personal Life Coach teachings, which I looked forward to going home and working on this new career. Soon, I will learn to look forward to coming home and being that Personal Life Coach as a second job. That my friends are how to maintain a boring hated job that is no longer my dream job.
If you are stuck in a job you hate, or no longer like. Become very clear at what you want. Discover why you want to do that new career. Develop a plan to accomplish becoming involved in this job. Decide what the priorities are in becoming involved in the new career, and move toward it every day. Also, remember that "attitude is everything." For those of us who must remain working in our dead end job, this is the crucial key.
