Heart And Meaning

by Carrie Fleharty

What has heart and meaning? The answer to that question will be different to each individual person. Maybe I should ask what has heart and meaning in your life? The simplified version of this question would be: "Am I fulfilled?" On a daily basis are you being fulfilled in your job, your relationships, your spirituality, your loves? How do you feel about each of these aspects of your lives?

For me, I am asking those very questions, but something is missing. Am I putting heart and meaning in my daily chores and routines? I start off my day with a prayer, and I end my day with a prayer. Something is missing in my life, and that missing piece is very important. I seem to go to work, and usually I'm fulfilled to some degree. Lately, however, I am not feeling very fulfilled. As I write this article I'm wondering if I forgot to put heart and meaning in my job. I have a wonderful relationship, but today, I could take it or leave it. I'm missing something there too. What is the missing piece?

This kind of reminds me of Shel Silverstein's book "The Missing Piece." If you haven't read that book, then I'd suggest you go to your local library and check one out. That book is all about what is missing in our lives. Anyway...let's continue.

As the writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery states "The meaning of things lies not in the things themselves, but in our attitude towards them." I bet if I were to look closely at my day job, then I would find that this statement would be true about my job. According to some sources the key to meaningfulness even at the job site is to embrace the situation, and look toward the mastery of the reason behind the situation or job. In other words look beyond the tasks that are to be accomplished, and realize that no one is alone. Find strength in the fact that all actions contribute to a cause, a situation or a job.

To find meaning in your life is to look at how you feel about the aspects of the situation, job, cause or task. Find out what bugs you, moves you, or angers you. Speak up, and put yourself out there. Take a stand, and show the situation, the cause, or job and be brave and show the world that you care. With care and expanding your focus beyond yourself and finding the underlying goals then you will be a part of something bigger than yourself. With that focus expanded then you will eventually find and embrace meaningfulness.

The way to go beyond yourself and embrace a fuller meaning is to become conscious of every action you take. To become conscious is to be awake in body, mind and soul. To provide heart and meaning the consciousness will bring to you greater meaning. In order to discover and develop an inner life and give your inner soul a voice is to touch your deepest most innermost feelings. These feelings become an important part of the workplace, or situation. If your feelings are not in tune with your body, mind and soul, then you are not living a meaningful life.

What has heart and meaning? Everything that you give conscious attention to becomes meaningful. So, in order for me to experience my job situation in a better light, then I must go beyond the task at hand and look towards the bigger picture. I also must dive into my inner most feelings and provide a voice to those feelings. If I am conscious at every moment, and with every task, then I am providing heart and meaning to the job. Eventually I'll be giving heart and meaning to everyone I encounter.

When in a situation, helping a cause, or in a job, become conscious. As they say; "Put your heart and soul into it." Then you will have a better life at work, or just a better life.
